The Dollhouse Machine Jumps into Action November 2, 2007

Whedon’s planned TV show has already spawned Dollhouse “fan sites” on the web, just hours after the mastermind that is Joss revealed his deal with FOX to produce the show. Dollverse appears to be among the first out of the gate, while the Myspace, Facebook, and Livejournal sites appear to have come online shortly thereafter. The Myspace site can already boast more than 70 “friends” as of this posting (I’m guessing this is a goodly number due to my lack of experience with Myspace) despite the fact that news of the show hit the Internet less than 40 hours ago.

I wonder how this compares to other new shows? Is this as amazing as it seems or are there people out there just waiting to put out sites in support of new shows.
I wonder also how the writer’s strike is going to change the show?
I was wondering along the same lines (you can probably tell from my quotes around “fan sites”). Since we’re dealing with Hollywood here, I’m always thinking that any hype for a show or movie is self-generated — ie.; at least initiated by the studios. On the other hand, Joss and his shows are a unique phenomenon, and I’m prepared to believe that there is an army of fans out there ready to generate their own momentum (witness the whole “Done The Impossible: The Fans’ Tale of Firefly & Serenity” thing).
If I had to guess, I’d say that the “army” of Joss fans really is out there, but somewhat sinisterly, the studios are trying to figure out how to mimic and manipulate this emerging trend to their own financial purposes. Thus, the “Machine” reference in the title.
Guessing again about the writer’s strike, I’d say it probably won’t last long enough to affect the show’s production (starting in Spring ’08?).

This would delay everything. This is certainly no exception to anything. The strike has to happen. I wish it didn’t, but it has to, and it has to go on for as long as it has to. When that is done, this will start and a few months after that, we will be filming. If there were no strike, we would be looking at something like February.”
I support the strike but I hope it hurries up.
Interesting…there must be a much longer lead-time to start shooting than I thought. I support the strike too. As I understand it, writers have been getting the short end of the stick in Hollywood for a long time now and this is reflected in their residuals. I just don’t want it to affect any of “my” shows 😉
Yep, I’m a NIMBY, too. Also I don’t want it to hurt Max. She was in a deal to close a script but the strike may mess with that.
Wow…very impressive! Her website has a nice aesthetic, so I’m not suprised. I hope she’s able to weather the strike.
If you have time, check out the script that got made into a movie. Its very well written! She won a prestigious prize for it (I’m embarrassed that I’ve forgotten which one)
She isn’t very proud of the movie that was made out of it but I love the script.

I have another friend who teaches screenwriting in SF. One day I mentioned knowing Max. He nearly went crazy. “you know THE Max Adams. She’s amazing.”
According to him, she’s a screenwriter’s screenwriter.
